BRIEF 2: UNDP 'WORLD WATERS' EMBASSY HQ - CLOSED

The world's water resources are under great pressure; population growth, the increasing industrialisation of nations and the ever present threats presented by climate change are focusing minds on how best to utilise responsibly and conserve this precious resource.

The formation of plans and strategies that will ensure the long term protection of water resources will be the responsibility of all nations. This Line of site brief asks you to create a United Nations Water Embassy that will be the global hub for the creation of these plans. And where better to place it - in the heart of one of the world's harshest deserts.

This brief is now closed

Building description: An HQ for world water management (drought regions).  An International office for policy and for water development projects - from drinking water to agricultural development.   It would be as much a statement as it would be political hub. Projects will be managed from the embassy.
Location: Namibia. You can pinpoint the location on Google Earth.
Area available for build: 2 hectares
People numbers: Around 60 people will be permanently based at the Embassy, another 100 will visit on a part time basis and conduct experimental and project work.
  Ground conditions: Desert sand.
Climate: Desert; hot, dry; rainfall sparse and erratic.
  Cultural sensitivity:

None.

  Building feel: No preconceived ideas.
Planning for the future: None included as part of the brief - but can be included in the design.
Type of architect: It's a unique opportunity, the only criteria is a creative mind.
Judging criteria: Your submission will be judged against:
• Architectural vision
• Demonstration of innovation
• Pragmatism - a 'within the realms of possibility' solution without compromising design innovation
• The quality of the sketch
• The ability to engage with the cultural and economic issues that might relate to specific aspects of the project (this at a low level)
Timetable: This brief is now closed
